1. Efficient Irrigation System Design

An efficient irrigation system design is one that delivers water uniformly to the crop with the least amount of energy and economic cost for materials to build and operate the system. Water application uniformity is important. There are energy factors like friction pressure loss and elevation change that cause variations throughout the system and they must be taken into account. The goal of the system designer is to achieve a good uniformity while keeping material costs reasonable. Some of these design factors will be discussed shortly.

One can talk about Irrigation Efficiency which is applying the minimum amount of water to achieve the greatest good. Another measure of efficiency is Distribution Uniformity which is applying water as evenly as possible so all plants receive the same amount of water. The bottom line is that the plant receiving the least amount of water governs when and how long the irrigation system must operate.

Topic Objectives for System Design:

  • Learners will learn what makes an efficient system

  • Learners will learn about uniform water application

  • Learners will learn about effects of pressure and friction
