2. Types of Irrigation Systems

The primary nursery and greenhouse irrigation systems are overhead sprinkler, microirrigation or trickle and subirrigation systems.

There are many different types and sizes of sprinklers and the same is true of all the emission devices available under the category of microirrigation. In this section some of these emission devices will be discussed in reference to the applications in the nursery or greenhouse crop areas.

Its important for you to understand:

  • The different types irrigation systems that can be used.
  • The differences between overhead and trickle/drip irrigation systems.
  • Which irrigation systems that are more appropriate for different production siutations (e.g. field, container-nursery and greenhouse production).
  • Differences in water application patterns, efficiency, application uniformity and operating conditions.
  • The requirement for clean water in trickle/drip systems.
